Harting Technology Group has established itself as a pioneer in sustainability and as a leading provider of connectivity solutions for industrial technologies. With the implementation of SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, part of the SAP sustainability portfolio, Harting has automated and scaled the CO₂ emission recording of 13,000 materials. This data granular, verifiable “one-click” solution supports the company on its way to climate neutrality by 2030.
Challenges and opportunities
Harting faced the challenge of finding a reliable method for calculating CO2 emissions over thousands of production materials, while at the same time customer and supplier expectations in relation to sustainability had to be met. The use of the existing SAP ERP application landscape and the maintenance of established green production and renewable energy processes were crucial.
“Business and environmental protection go hand in hand with us. We are convinced that we have to take both aspects into account in order to be successful in the long term.”
Dietmar Harting, member of the board and partner of the Harting Technology Group.
Innovations for a sustainable future
As a gold standard of connectivity in various industrial areas, Harting needed a robust system for precise evaluation of emissions. SAP Sustainability Footprint Management automates the data collection, scales emissions calculations and creates CO₂ transparency along the entire supply chain. “The key to the transparent communication of our CO₂ emissions and the detection of reduction potential lies in the automated calculation and granularity of the data provided by SAP,” explains Stephan Middelkamp, General Manager Quality and Technology at Harting.
This solution enables Harting, real-time, granular data to support the “Greenline” label, an environmentally friendly label that highlights the use of renewable materials with up to 70% CO₂ reduction.
Strengthen sustainable production
With SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, Harting can now precisely calculate and report product carbon footprints. This ability is crucial to address upcoming EU sustainability regulations, such as the corporate sustainability reporting directive and digital product passport. The solution simplifies complex data in verifiable “one-click” results and promotes sustainable production practices.
The use of SAP Responsible Design and Production (RDP) is also integrated into Harting’s sustainability strategy, which helps you to make products responsible and sustainably from the start, to reduce plastic taxes and to promote recycling.
“Green is our way of thinking, green is our actions.”
Jordy Brinks, Global Environmental Manager at Harting.
On the way to a greener future
SAP promotes Harting’s sustainability trip by enabling them to make products more sustainable, reduce plastic taxes, promote responsibility and to further promote recycling practices. With these efforts, Harting strives to achieve climate neutrality at all locations by 2030, which underlines their commitment to sustainable growth and environmental responsibility.
“As a family business, we combine resistance with the will to innovate and regional loyalty. For us, this means taking responsibility for people and the environment. We not only design a planet worth living for future generations, but also make the future possible.”
Dietmar Harting, member of the board and partner of the Harting Technology Group.
The Harting Technology Group continues to drive sensible changes by combining business success with a greener future and aligning family ideals with sustainability goals.
Harting at the SAP Innovation Awards 2025
All of these efforts did not remain unnoticed: Harting was long recognized as a sustainability pioneer. This year they won the SAP Innovation Award in the sustainability hero category, using SAP responsible design and production (RDP) to create 85% of their plastic packaging material from recycled materials.
