The energy industry is in change: digitization, sustainability and future viability are central drivers. With RISE with SAP, the energy group RWE digitizes its IT and thus not only drives innovations, but also the energy transition decisively.
The future of the energy industry is digital and sustainable. The largest German energy supplier RWE relies on Rise with SAP and the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. This means that RWE drives the energy transition not only through renewable energies, but also through consistent digitization and modernization of its IT landscape.
Why is RWE relies on Rise with SAP?
With the challenge of a future-proof SAP landscape, RWE was faced with the decision: migrate the systems independently into the cloud or go into the future with a strong partner. The choice fell on the deepening of the existing partnership with SAP – with a special focus on stable operation and minimal downtimes of corporate systems.
Matthias Franke, Head of SAP Technology & Integration at RWE, reports:
“Before the cloud transformation, we had a large IT landscape on-premise. However, this no longer met the flexibility and scalability requirements for our growth.”
That is why RWE opted for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, implemented as a Rise with SAP solution.
The way to a modern, future-proof IT landscape
With a clearly oriented IT strategy, RWE determined the complete switch to the cloud. The longstanding partnership with SAP and the advantages of Rise With Sap convinced:
“We exchanged SAP about the cloud transformation very early on and were among the first companies that Rise with SAP actively used,” emphasizes Franke.
The process was designed in partnership: All solutions were analyzed together with SAP architects and a detailed transformation strategy was created together with SAP architects. “There was no team SAP and no team RWE, just one team. That was the key to success,” said Franke.
Lift & Shift and Clean Core strategy as success factors
The start was a consistent lift & shift approach:
“For migration to the SAP Rise environment, we chose the lift & shift approach. This means that during migration, no system changes were carried out by upgrades, patches, etc. so as not to endanger the migration project. All systems were technically so far prepared. could replace the SAP with native cloud solutions available via Business Technology Platform. ”
For RWE, the future Clean Core strategy is also essential: the SAP systems are freed from in-house developments in order to implement upgrades and innovations easily and quickly. With the help of the SAP Tool Chain-consisting of SAP Signavio, SAP Leanix, SAP Cloud Alm and Tricentis-RWE gains a holistic overview of processes and IT architecture.
“For the first time, we combine architecture, processes and software solutions for more transparency and fast reaction.” explains Franke.
Concrete added value through SAP cloud solutions
-System stability of 99.7 %-efficient, reliable IT processes.
Low downtime: All migrations ran according to plan, not a single major incident was created
– Clear responsibilities and increase in efficiency through uniform contacts.
-Automatic security updates increase IT security.
-Direct access to SAP innovations.
– Departments also benefit: With SAP Signavio, processes can now be documented data -based, weaknesses identified and specifically improved.
View of the cloud future: SAP BTP and Innovation
RWE pursues the goal of streamlining its own SAP landscape and wherever possible on cloud native solutions from the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to set.
“SAP cloud products are becoming increasingly important for RWE because they enable innovations and make us much faster and more flexible,” says Franke. The strategic goal: to use new solutions and services from the SAP cloud ecosystem in order to consistently support the path to climate neutrality.
Rise with SAP is the foundation of the digital transformation at RWE
For Matthias Franke it is clear:
“For me, Rise with SAP means a complete solution from a single source, stable operation with high flexibility and scalability.” The SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition also enables corporate adaptations that would not be possible in the public cloud.
