Walldorf – SAP is strengthening its existing partnership with Avelios Medical through a strategic investment, thereby significantly driving forward the joint development of a sovereign digital infrastructure for hospitals.

Avelios’ cloud-native hospital information system (HIS) will be operated on the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to create mutual added value through the use of services for AI, data management and integration into the SAP Business Suite. With this investment, SAP is laying the foundation for a modern, sovereign hospital platform that sustainably supports hospitals in their digital transformation.

SAP is becoming the technological backbone of modern clinical care

With the investment, SAP underlines its role as a central provider of a sovereign, open and scalable platform architecture in the healthcare sector. The goal is to replace the fragmented IT landscapes of many hospitals with a modern platform approach that enables innovation, interoperability and consistent data use.

AI in healthcare: SAP and Fresenius accelerate digital healthcare

SAP and Avelios share the same healthcare technology strategy and are complementary in their applications. Through the investment, SAP supports the transformation of IT in the healthcare sector. In combination with Avelios and SAP, modern, open, sovereign hospital system landscapes become reality. SAP BTP forms the technological basis of the partnership. On it, Avelios will further develop its cloud-native hospital information system, use SAP services for AI and data management and deepen the integration with the SAP Business Suite. The solution is also expected to run on the sovereign SAP Cloud Infrastructure. The result will be a fully data-driven, interoperable system that will modernize clinical processes and enable AI-powered innovation – from documentation to billing to research. At the same time, BTP creates a scalable, AI-capable basis to efficiently automate and continuously develop clinical and administrative processes.

“With the investment in Avelios, we are creating the technological basis for an open, sovereign and scalable platform for the healthcare industry,” says Sebastian Steinhäuser, Chief Operating Officer and Member of the Board of Management of SAP SE. “Together, we enable hospitals to have a consistently data-based infrastructure that enables modern care, more resilient processes and AI-supported innovation.”

“SAP’s investment is a strong signal for the future of clinical digitalization. Together we are creating a platform that brings together medical excellence and modern technology. Our vision is a clinical IT that relieves the burden on treating patients, makes data intelligently usable and sustainably accelerates innovation in care and research. With SAP at our side, we can advance this transformation in a new dimension,” says Christian Albrecht, co-founder and CEO of Avelios Medical.

The investment in Avelios also comes in the context of the recently declared strategic partnership between SAP and Fresenius with the common goal of an open digital healthcare ecosystem.
