I’m excited to share one of the latest enhancements in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud – Standard Model (SAP PaPM Cloud SM), which you can already experience in your tenants today. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through Global Notification Settings and show how they help you better manage and govern system notifications.

With growing collaboration across environments, processes, and teams in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model (SAP PaPM Cloud SM), notifications play an important role in keeping users informed about relevant system activities. However, when notification behavior is managed only at user level, system administrators have limited control over which updates should be mandatory, optional, or disabled across the system. 

Global Notification Settings address this by introducing centralized notification governance within the Settings screen, allowing administrators to define notification behavior at system level. This enhancement allows administrators to configure notification categories  as always sent, deactivated, or managed individually by end users, creating a balance between centralized control and user flexibility. 

This blog post provides an overview of Global Notification Settings, including the available configuration options, supported notification categories, and the notification governance model introduced in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud – Standard Model.

Why Do Global Notification Settings Matter? 

Global Notification Settings provide a centralized and scalable approach to notification management in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model. By defining notification behavior at system level, administrators can ensure consistent communication rules across the system while still allowing user flexibility where appropriate. 

This helps reduce missed critical updates, limit unnecessary notifications, and maintain predictable notification behavior across teams and delivery channels. As a result, both administrators and end users benefit from a clearer and more consistent notification experience..

Access and Required Roles 

Global Notification Settings are available through the Settings application and are intended for system-level administration. Access to this functionality is available to users assigned to roles that provide administrative privileges, such as: 

  • ADMIN_USER_ALL  
  • ADMIN_USER_RESTRICTED  
  • SETTINGS

This section is organized in such way to give administrators a clear overview of notification governance settings and allows configuration per notification category, including key elements:

  • Notification Channel Tabs
    Configuration is separated into two delivery channels:
    • In-App Notifications tab – used to define how notifications are delivered within the application interface.
    • Email Notifications tab – controls how notifications are delivered via email communication.

Each channel can be configured independently, allowing administrators to define separate rules for in-app and email notifications, or email notifications can follow the same configuration as in-app notifications by marking the Reuse settings from In-App checkbox on the Email Notifications tab:

When this checkbox is marked, email notification settings inherit the in-app configuration, and the individual notification type configuration options in the Email Notifications tab become grayed out and non-editable.

  • Information Banner
    An informational message is displayed below the tabs to indicate that changes applied within Global Notification Settings affect all users across the system.

  • Notification Types
    The following notification types are categories of events that can initiate system notifications. Each category includes specific actions or changes that may generate in-app or email notifications based on the configured settings:
    • Activity Changes – notifications initiated  by workflow-related actions such as Submit, Reject, Approve, Complete, or when a new comment is added, updated, or deleted  .

    • Private Environment Changes – notifications initiated when a private environment is created, updated, deleted, imported, overwritten, assigned to teams, or changed from “Private” to “Public.”

    • Process Changes – notifications initiated by process state updates, including transitions such as Open, Deployed, Suspended, Completed, or Canceled.

    • Scheduled Jobs – notifications initiated by scheduled job lifecycle events, including creation, start, completion, or when a scheduled job becomes due.

    • Team Changes – notifications initiated when a user is assigned or unassigned from a team or child team, or when a team is marked or unmarked as obsolete.

  •  Notification Delivery Rules
    Each notification type includes a dropdown option that allows administrators to define how notifications are managed and delivered for that category:
    • Allow users to manage settings – notification delivery for the selected notification type is controlled by the end user through User Preferences. Users can notifications based on their personal preference.

      Note: For additional details regarding User Preferences, refer to the dedicated documentation: SAP Help Portal – User Preferences in Standard Model. 

    • Always Send – notifications are automatically delivered to users whenever an event associated with the selected notification type is initiated. These notifications are enforced by Global Notification Settings and cannot be deactivated in User Preferences.

    • Never Send  notifications are blocked for the selected notification type, meaning users will not receive them when related events are initiated and these notifications remain deactivated regardless of user’s configuration.

Notification Delivery Rule Scenarios

Regardless of whether the notification is delivered through in-pp or email, Global Notification Settings behavior is determined by the administrator’s configuration for each notification type.

Always Send
When a notification type is configured as Always Send, notifications are enforced at system level regardless of user preferences. Users automatically receive notifications for initiated events, and the related options in User Preferences appear checked, greyed out, and non-editable.

Allow Users to Manage Settings
When a notification type is configured as Allow Users to Manage Settings, notification delivery depends on the user’s configuration. Users can independently activate or deactivate notifications, and the related options in User Preferences remain editable and not greyed out.

Never Send
When a notification type is configured as Never Send, notifications are disabled regardless of user’s configuration. Users cannot activate notifications for that category, and the related options in User Preferences appear unchecked, greyed out, and non-editable.
