SAP Cloud ERP Private Upgrades: Reducing Complexity and Improving Predictability

 

Many SAP Cloud ERP Private customers only realize how much complexity has built up around their systems after they have gone several years without a major update.

The harder part is usually not the technical upgrade itself, but everything that accumulated around it over time: custom code that was never cleaned up, interfaces added by different project teams, outdated testing approaches, or business processes nobody fully documented anymore. What started as “we’ll skip one release” can quickly turn into a much larger effort a few years later.

We are hearing similar concerns across SAP Centers of Excellence, architecture teams, and IT organizations responsible for long-term ERP operations. In parallel, many SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private customers running releases 1610 through 2021 are already at or approaching end of mainstream or extended maintenance windows.

Why many organizations are under pressure now

At the same time, upgrades are increasingly tied to access to newer SAP capabilities — including AI-related functionality, integration improvements, automation features, operational tooling, and platform innovations that are only available on more current releases.

That combination is creating pressure for many IT organizations to plan more proactively.

One thing that consistently comes up in customer discussions is that upgrade effort is often underestimated when systems have not been upgraded regularly. Customers sometimes assume skipping multiple releases reduces workload because upgrades happen less frequently. Operationally, the opposite is usually true.

Large release jumps compress years of change into one preparation cycle

Teams suddenly need to review deprecated functionality, reassess custom code, validate integrations, align infrastructure requirements, and significantly expand testing scope at the same time.

It is not unusual for customers with long upgrade gaps to spend 6–9 months — sometimes longer — on preparation and testing activities before production execution even begins.

Why regular upgrades matter

Customers that upgrade more regularly generally see more predictable upgrade cycles over time.

Not because upgrades become trivial, but because the operational processes around them improve.

  • Teams stay familiar with the tooling
  • Testing becomes more repeatable
  • Custom code remediation stays manageable
  • Planning assumptions become more realistic

There are also practical consequences to staying too long on older releases that sometimes only become visible late in the planning process.

Customers can run into:

  • Missing legal updates
  • Unsupported technology stack combinations
  • Limitations around support package availability
  • Support expectations that no longer fully align with older environments

Introducing the 2026 Cloud ERP Private Upgrade Success Webinar Series

These are some of the reasons we are launching a new external webinar series focused on SAP Cloud ERP Private upgrades.

The goal is not to present upgrades as a theoretical best practice discussion. The intent is much more practical: helping customers better structure upgrade planning, understand the tooling available, and reduce avoidable complexity before projects become difficult to manage.

The sessions are designed to consolidate practical upgrade considerations customers often have to piece together across multiple SAP tools and planning discussions.

The webinar series will run from June through August and is intended for IT leaders and business decision-makers responsible for upgrade strategy and execution, including IT Directors, IT Managers, Heads of Architecture, and SAP Centers of Excellence.

Part 1 of the series focuses on upgrade planning fundamentals and the operational tooling customers use during preparation and execution.

Looking ahead: Operationalizing upgrades

Part 2 of the webinar series, planned for later in the summer, will focus more heavily on operational execution topics and discussions around how organizations can operationalize upgrades so they become more routine and less disruptive.

Because in practice, that is often the bigger objective.

Not simply completing one upgrade project successfully but creating a model where staying current no longer turns into a large-scale event every few years.
