Walldorf — January 19, 2026 —SAP and Fresenius today announced that both companies intend to enter into a strategic partnership to accelerate innovation for stronger digital healthcare. Together, the companies are creating the digital backbone for sovereign, interoperable and AI-supported healthcare. The solutions combine the expertise of Fresenius as one of the largest healthcare companies in the world with future-oriented SAP technologies and meet high requirements for data sovereignty, security and regulatory compliance. The goal is an open, integrated and data-based digital health ecosystem that enables hospitals and medical facilities to safely use artificial intelligence (AI) and handle health data responsibly while complying with all regulatory requirements.
Digital sovereignty for healthcare
SAP and Fresenius are jointly planning to build an individual, scalable healthcare platform that enables networked, data-driven healthcare processes. On this basis, the companies develop joint, future-oriented and AI-supported healthcare solutions in order to sustainably increase quality, transparency and efficiency across the entire supply chain and thus set new standards for digital innovation in the healthcare sector. The basis is formed by proven SAP technologies and products such as the SAP Business Suite, the SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC), the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) and SAP Business AI. These core elements help create a unified, compliant, open and extensible foundation for the secure exchange and use of data and for the operation of AI models in a controlled environment.
Together, the companies plan to build a sovereign, European solution for an integrated healthcare ecosystem that supports the connection of modern hospital information systems (HIS) in accordance with SAP's “AnyEMR” strategy. This is intended to enable the seamless connection of hospital information systems (HIS), electronic patient records and other medical applications through interfaces based on open industry standards such as HL7 FHIR.

Together, we want to set new standards for data sovereignty, security and innovation in healthcare. Thanks to SAP, Fresenius can use the full potential of digital and AI-supported processes and thus further sustainably improve patient care,” says Christian Klein, CEO and member of the Board of Management of SAP SE.

In doing so, we are creating more space for what really counts: the care of patients,” adds Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius.
As part of the joint transformation project, both companies plan to invest a mid-three-digit million euro amount in the medium term in order to consistently digitize Fresenius' health care processes and make them future-proof.
The partnership is implemented in various forms of collaboration. This includes joint investments in start-ups and scale-ups, joint technological developments and collaboration within the framework of coordinated governance structures between both companies.
