Welcome to this blog post! In today's edition, I want to outline how companies can achieve full end-to-end process visibility using SAP Build Process Automation (SBPA) integrated with SAP Integrated Product Development (IPD) to move beyond manual status checks and fragmented inboxes.

End-to-end process visibility is not a reporting exercise; it’s the basis for eliminating revenue‑draining bottlenecks across product and supply chain operations. Status fields and ad hoc check‑ins create an illusion of control while fragmentation persists between systems, teams, and partners. The consequences are measurable: longer cycle times, governance gaps, compliance exposure, and poor supplier and stakeholder experiences.

In this blog, you will find out how manufacturing and industrial companies can:

  • Design and automate workflows using low-code/no-code tools in SAP Build Process Automation
  • Gain real-time, graphical visibility into running processes and identify bottlenecks proactively
  • Manage all workflow tasks from a single unified inbox using SAP Task Center
  • Leverage AI to generate workflows, forms, and first-level task analysis

The Challenge: Visibility Gaps Are Costly

Most teams know they have bottlenecks – the challenge is finding them in time. Product teams often face a dual mandate: move faster and stay compliant across functions and partners. The fastest path is to bring workflows, tasks, and product data into one place and layer AI on top to remove friction. When every task carries its linked files, reference objects, and context, teams can stop chasing information and start executing with clarity.

Our webinar poll confirmed it: confidence in current KPIs actually reflecting real process bottlenecks is low. The symptoms are familiar: too many “what's the status?” calls, siloed systems, disconnected departments, and compliance risks lurking beneath the surface.

What is needed is a connected workflow layer that makes every process step visible, traceable, and actionable in real time.

The Solution: Three Capabilities That Make the Difference

1. Design Workflows visually and with AI Assistance

SAP Build Process Automation provides a low-code/no-code environment for building workflows visually. You can leverage AI to generate business processes based on your inputs in natural language.

The same applies to forms – describe the fields you need and AI builds them, complete with correct field types and validation rules.

Unify workflow orchestration with a visibility layer. Use low-code automation to model cross-functional processes (collaboration tasks, approvals, document exchanges, and system updates) while turning each process instance into interactive analytics. Provide path analysis, cycle times, backlog by assignee or role, SLA thresholds, and real-time bottleneck detection. When a step is delayed due to missing input, highlight the issue, quantify impact, and trigger corrective or preventive actions. With full context on every task, you can instantly drill-down from portfolio-level KPIs to the specific artifact or decision causing the delay. Connect cloud and legacy systems, internal teams, and external partners to deliver complete, actionable audit trails.

Make visibility prescriptive to drive business impact. Baseline metrics like cycle time, throughput, and trends are useful, but value accelerates when thresholds and alerts match operational realities like supplier qualification lead times, label review SLAs, engineering change approval windows, best-before or delivery-date risk. Anchor KPIs in system data instead of spreadsheets to cut coordination meetings, eliminate status chasing, and push decisions to the point of work. Organizations report double-digit cycle time reductions by replacing manual checks and vague “in progress” statuses with orchestrated tasks, unified action inboxes, and auto-generated insights that surface risks before they escalate.

2. Execute Tasks from a Unified Inbox

A unified Task Center, paired with process visibility and AI guidance, turns workflows into an execution cockpit: one place to see blockers, ownership, standards, and fixes.

All workflow tasks route directly to SAP Task Center – a single inbox connecting SAP IPD, SAP S/4HANA, SAP Ariba, and other systems. Users can claim tasks, review linked product data, fill in forms, and submit approvals without switching between systems. The result is a resilient, auditable digital thread across product development and supply chain collaboration that removes blind spots, accelerates decisions, and builds partner trust—grounding choices in data, avoiding compliance surprises, and creating measurable time-to-market gains.

The centralized task center consolidates approvals and forms across PLM, procurement, and internal collaboration, giving processors a single inbox to claim, complete, and submit. Each task carries its linked objects and documentation, so decisions happen in context. Process inputs like best-before dates, delivery dates, specification attributes become first-class variables that follow the workflow instance. This structure enables targeted routing, SLA measurement, and proactive nudges without burdening contributors. The outcome is one operational surface for multi-system processes with built-in traceability.

3. Monitor KPIs and Act Proactively

Visibility must be designed. The Process Visibility Dashboard aggregates all running workflow instances into an interactive, graphical view. Teams can combine multiple workflows, define relationships via shared business keys, and expose the dimensions that matter: status, cycle time, release counts, and any domain-specific date or attribute. With those dimensions in place, the organization defines performance indicators and sets reactive or proactive actions. If a best-before date is surpassed or a cycle-time benchmark is at risk, actions trigger automatically: start a corrective workflow, send a targeted notification, or block a release. This closes the loop from monitoring to response and turns dashboards into operational control.

The result: an estimated 35% reduction in cycle time.

What's Coming Next?

Prompt-to-Process

  • Describe your workflow in natural language and let AI generate the initial flow

AI Form Generation

  • Automate the creation of complex business forms via simple text instructions

Task Validation Agent [Roadmap]

  • Validate Correctness and Completeness within workflow tasks

On the roadmap is a capability that takes AI a step further. The Task Validation Agent automatically compares a submitted task – an uploaded certificate, a completed feasibility document – against its expected outcome, delivering an instant correctness and completeness score with specific recommendations. Users get a first-level screening before they even submit, reducing review cycles and accelerating throughput.

Conclusion

End-to-end process visibility turns reactive status-chasing into proactive, data-driven operations. SAP Build Process Automation, integrated with SAP IPD, connects workflow execution, task management, and KPI monitoring into a single auditable system – with AI making it faster and smarter at every step.
