Welcome to this blog post! In today's edition, I want to outline how life sciences companies can modernize their serialization and track-and-trace operations using SAP Traceability Hub Repository – SAP's fully public cloud-based solution for pharmaceutical serialization compliance.

Pharmaceutical serialization is no longer optional. Regulations like the US Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) and the EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) require manufacturers, distributors, and dispensers to track serialized products across the entire supply chain and to report that data to regulatory authorities in near real time. Yet many companies still rely on fragmented, costly, or overly complex infrastructure to meet these obligations.

In this blog, you will find out how pharma companies can:

  • Manage serial number generation, distribution, and lifecycle tracking entirely in the public Cloud.
  • Capture and process GS1 EPCIS-based track and trace events from supply chain partners.
  • Automate regulatory reporting for US DSCSA, EU FMD and other countries` compliances and simplify validation efforts.
  • Understand where SAP Traceability Hub Repository fits versus SAP Advanced Track and Trace for Pharmaceuticals (ATTP)

Serialization Compliance Is Complex, Infrastructure Shouldn't Be

Pharmaceutical companies face a dual burden: meeting increasingly stringent regulatory requirements across multiple countries while managing the operational complexity of serialization across manufacturing sites, contract manufacturers, logistics partners, and regulatory systems. While some companies strive for the benefits of private Cloud to meet their complex supply chain and operations requirements, for companies whose serialization processes follow industry-standard patterns, the cost and effort of maintaining a private Cloud infrastructure with its deep customization, single-tenant environments, and complex upgrade cycles is difficult to justify,

The symptoms are familiar: lengthy implementation timelines, high total cost of ownership, expensive validation cycles, and difficulty scaling to new markets or acquiring entities without significant rearchitecting. What is needed is a standardized, cloud-native serialization backbone that handles the complexity of regulatory compliance without requiring companies to maintain that complexity themselves.

How the SAP Traceability Hub Repository can help you solve such challenges

SAP Traceability Hub Repository is a fully public cloud-based serialization object repository, forming one half of the SAP Traceability Hub solution. The other half is SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity (formerly SAP Information Collaboration Hub), which handles partner connectivity, country reporting, and regulatory system integration.

Together, they deliver an end-to-end public cloud serialization capability. The integration between the two components is fully managed by SAP.

Pricing Simplification: One Product for Connectivity

In a recent update, SAP consolidated the five scenario-based SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity options into a single unified product / SKU with volume-based pricing. This simplification removes complexity from sales conversations, makes adoption of the full connectivity scope more accessible, and aligns the pricing model with how customers actually consume the solution.

Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud: Choosing the Right Fit

SAP offers two paths for serialization: pure public Cloud deployment or hybrid Cloud deployment:

In a fully public deployment scenario, the SAP Traceability Hub Repository (Public Cloud) runs in a multi-tenant environment, fully managed by SAP. In the hybrid deployment scenario, the SAP ATTP (Private Cloud) runs in a single-tenant environment, hosted by SAP or an SAP partner. Here is an overview of the characteristics of each offering:

The analogy to SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud is intentional and instructive. The public cloud solution prioritizes speed of adoption, reduced infrastructure overhead, and cloud-native scalability. The private cloud solution prioritizes maximum flexibility, deep configurability, and support for the most complex global operations. Please note that both solutions work seamlessly with SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity.
