The Challenge

As organizations increasingly adopt SAP Datasphere to power data integration, modeling, and analytics workloads, managing consumption has become a critical aspect of operational success. However, one of the most common challenges customers face today is a lack of timely visibility into their Datasphere Capacity Unit (CU) usage.

In many cases, consumption is driven by multiple services running in parallel—such as Premium Outbound Integration, data replication tasks, or scheduled transformations. These services can scale dynamically based on workload demands, which is great for performance but less predictable from a cost perspective.

The issue? Customers often only discover they have exceeded their allocated or expected CU consumption after receiving their monthly bill. By that time, it is too late to take corrective action, and unexpected costs can impact both IT budgets and business planning cycles.

For organizations operating with fixed or forecasted budgets, this lack of real-time insight introduces risk:

  • Difficulty aligning IT consumption with financial planning
  • Limited ability to react to unexpected workload spikes
  • Reduced confidence in scaling Datasphere usage across the business

 

Key Insight

Cost transparency in cloud environments is not just about tracking individual services—it’s about understanding aggregate consumption in context of your budget.

While it is helpful to know how much each service consumes, what truly matters to decision-makers is:

  • How total consumption compares to purchased capacity
  • Whether current usage trends will exceed budget thresholds
  • Which services or workloads are driving unexpected increases

In other words, organizations need a holistic view of consumption, coupled with proactive alerts that signal when they are approaching limits—not just retrospective reports after costs have already been incurred.

 

The Solution: Enhanced FinOps Capabilities in SAP BTP

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) addresses this challenge through an enhanced FinOps (Financial Operations) dashboard, available in the Costs and Usage section of the BTP Cockpit.

This dashboard provides:

  • Centralized visibility into Datasphere capacity unit consumption
  • Detailed breakdowns by service, environment, and time period
  • Trend analysis to identify usage patterns over time
  • Budget monitoring tools to align consumption with financial targets

Most importantly, it enables organizations to move from a reactive cost management approach to a proactive FinOps strategy.

A key feature is the ability to configure threshold-based alerts. These alerts notify administrators and stakeholders when consumption approaches defined limits—such as 70%, 85%, or 100% of allocated capacity.

Here is a quick demo:

1) Open BTP Cockpit and select Cost and Usage

 

2) From the usage option, you can see the usage of Datasphere components.

3) In Datasphere,  the System > Configuration > Tenant Configuration should show similar consumption.

4) Our engineering teams will also be making improvements into the Monitoring > Capacities page to contain historical monitoring. This should be available very soon ** details in appendix **

 5) You can utilize the Budget area of the dashboard to alert Administrators when the budget reaches a threshold.

The Outcome

By leveraging the enhanced FinOps dashboard and setting consumption thresholds, organizations can avoid unexpected costs, improve budget accuracy, optimize resource utilization and enable better decision-making. 

 

Appendix

Our engineering teams are making improvements to the Monitor > Capacities page. Our visions is that this page will be the central area to view consumption in Datasphere. Here are some improvements we are making:

1) Spaces – show consumption based on spaces. So that you can get clarity into which Spaces are using the resources
