Ask any enterprise architect to show you their process documentation and they will have something ready within the hour. Swim lanes, decision gateways, system touchpoints, RACI assignments etc. often built painstakingly over years with real organizational effort. This work matters. Process maps are how organizations onboard people, pass regulatory audits, design and configure systems, and keep complex operations running consistently across geographies and teams. That investment deserves respect, not dismissal.
And yet , when the board asks “where should we invest for the next three years?” or a merger lands on the CFO's desk, or a RISE with SAP programme needs to decide what to standardize and what to protect, something tends to happen in the room. The process maps come out, and the conversation immediately gets tangled.
Whose process variant is the right one? How do we compare two business units running completely different workflows when they are fundamentally doing the same thing?
The detail that makes process maps powerful for operations makes them nearly impossible to use for strategic decisions.
Business capability modeling is the layer that makes that investment pay dividends at a different altitude.
