During the SAP Sapphire events in May 2026, SAP introduced the Autonomous Enterprise. You can read the announcement here.
In this blog, I would like to provide you with a simple overview of what the Autonomous Enterprise is and offer some initial guidance if you are a current SAP customer. Obviously, as things are rapidly changing, my blog is structured and valid based on the information and product releases available as of August 2026.
To start with, the Autonomous Enterprise is a whole new way of operating that requires a shift in how decisions are made, how work is executed, and how the business responds to change. In an Autonomous Enterprise, people set direction while artificial intelligence (AI) executes routine work, connecting insight directly to action across the organization.
So, as you can see, simply put, people are in charge of the main decisions and the direction of operating the enterprise, while AI executes routine work. Obviously, this will require some readiness in your business, technology stack, and governance so that you can fully benefit from this concept.
Now, let’s first understand the key elements of the Autonomous Enterprise. Here we have four elements, which you can see in the figure below:
a) Joule
b) SAP Autonomous Suite
c) Industry AI Applications
d) SAP Business AI Platform
Joule: Joule was first introduced by SAP a couple of years ago, in 2023, as an artificial intelligence copilot that truly understands your business. I wrote a blog on the foundational elements for Business AI, where Joule was recommended as your best friend. Obviously, Joule has evolved since then to become an engagement layer, bringing together data, workflows, and agents across SAP systems and beyond. That means it is becoming a major engagement layer where users will interact using natural language instead of running traditional menu scenarios or transactions.
SAP Autonomous Suite: The SAP Autonomous Suite is SAP’s integrated vision and portfolio for building an Autonomous Enterprise—an end-to-end suite of SAP cloud applications augmented with SAP Business AI, including Joule, embedded AI, assistants, and agents, that can perceive, decide, and act across business processes with minimal manual effort under enterprise guardrails. It brings together SAP’s ERP, finance, spend management, supply chain, HR, and CX solutions with embedded AI, automation, and event-driven orchestration so that organizations can move from reactive to self-optimizing operations.
Key characteristics:
- Outcome-driven autonomy: Continuously monitors signals across SAP apps and networks, detects exceptions, and recommends or executes next-best actions aligned to policies.
- Embedded AI and copilot: Joule provides natural language assistance and skills that surface contextual insights and trigger actions directly within SAP applications.
- End-to-end process coverage: Focus areas include autonomous finance, autonomous CX, and broader Autonomous Enterprise scenarios spanning order to cash, procure to pay, plan to produce, and more.
- Governance and control: Operates within defined business rules, compliance requirements, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Built on the SAP platform and SAP solutions end to end.
Industry AI Applications: In the SAP Autonomous Enterprise, Industry AI applications are domain-specific, prebuilt AI capabilities embedded across SAP’s industry cloud and line-of-business solutions that perceive signals, reason over SAP business context, and autonomously recommend or execute actions within guardrails. Watch this video to understand this concept better.
SAP Business AI Platform: The SAP Business AI Platform is SAP’s unified, enterprise-grade platform for building, extending, and running AI across SAP applications and data. It combines trustworthy AI services, orchestration, and governance with deep integration into SAP’s business processes and data models, so you can deliver embedded, outcome-driven AI, including Joule copilot skills, safely and at scale.
The platform is the next evolution of our unified platform and brings together the capabilities of SAP BTP, AI Foundation, SAP BDC, SAP HANA Cloud, and some capabilities from the Business Transformation Management portfolio. This comprehensive platform can only be delivered through the breadth and depth of SAP’s technical landscape. It ushers in a new era of productivity, empowering developers as confident, compliant AI builders while elevating IT leaders and CIOs as the architects of enterprise AI strategy.
Now, as you can see, this concept is driving a new operating model for the age of AI; hence, you need to be ready to operate this way. So, I recommend that you download this executive guide to understand the concept in general, but more importantly, complete the readiness self-assessment to understand how you benchmark against this new operating model.
After completing your check, let’s assume you are ready to run your business in this new operating model. So, let’s focus on what you can do technically and functionally, depending on whether you are running SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Cloud ERP Private, or an SAP SAP Business Suite Package. First, I suggest you start by looking at which Business AI capabilities among the autonomous domains you want to begin using. The following link provides you with an overview of the capabilities.
Also, as Business AI capabilities are arriving in every domain, I suggest you review the following information, which explains the latest highlights, or look at the Autonomous Enterprise roadmap to see what is planned before you start developing your own.
In future blogs, I will cover some of the elements of the Autonomous Enterprise and how to move into these new concepts.
I encourage you to discuss these points with your SAP Customer Success Manager, SAP Account Executive, or SAP Partner. They may be able to provide you with additional recommendations and guidance, and help you discover new ideas on the Autonomous Enterprise capabilities that can help you drive more business outcomes.
Your insights and opinions are valuable, so please don’t hesitate to contribute by commenting on this blog.
