Hello, SAP Community members!
We are excited to announce that Joule, the AI assistant embedded in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model (SAP PaPM Cloud SM), is now available in two additional applications: Environment and Process Management.
In previous releases, Joule was available in Report Management, where it helped you analyze report data and generate insights. With this expansion, Joule is now your AI assistant in two additional applications, making it faster and more intuitive to navigate and accomplish tasks in Environment and Process Management.
This blog post walks you through all Joule capabilities available on these two applications. If you are looking for the technical integration and setup steps (SAP AI Core, SAP Launchpad, BTP Destination), please refer to our previous blog post:

General Joule Features
Joule in Environment and Process Management is the same Joule available in Report Management — the conversation panel, its features, and the underlying AI are shared across all three applications. The following general features are available wherever Joule is enabled:
- Conversation History Sidebar – Browse, rename, delete, and resume past conversations; start a new one at any time.
- File Upload – Upload external files (up to 5 files, 5 MB each) and ask Joule to analyze them alongside your application data.
- Web Search – When activated by your administrator, Joule can search the internet and return cited results.
- Conversation Controls – Stop an ongoing response, switch to fullscreen mode, and use follow-up question suggestions.
- Your Joule Rules – Set personal instructions in the Joule settings — such as preferred language, response style, or level of detail — and Joule applies them automatically to every new conversation.
- Guided Help – When needed, Joule consults the official SAP PaPM Cloud Standard Model documentation on the SAP Help Portal to answer your questions — giving you accurate, up-to-date guidance directly in the conversation, without leaving the application.

Opening Joule and Choosing a Mode
To open Joule in any Joule-enabled application, choose the Joule icon in the header toolbar. The Joule conversation panel opens on the right side of the screen.
Before sending your first message, choose how Joule operates using the Ask/Act toggle in the message input area:
- Ask – Read-only mode. Joule answers your questions and retrieves information, but does not make any changes to your data.
- Act – Action mode. Joule can perform operations on your behalf, such as creating, editing, or deleting records.
You can switch between Ask and Act at any point in the conversation.
Notes:
- All actions performed by Joule in Act mode are bound by your existing user authorizations. Joule does not elevate your permissions — if you do not have access to a resource, Joule cannot act on it either.
- Actions performed in Act mode are done in the background. The screen does not refresh automatically, so refresh the Environment or Process Management screen to see the changes reflected in the list
Joule Across Applications
Joule is a single, unified AI assistant shared across all Joule-enabled applications in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model. Two capabilities highlight this:
- Shared conversation history – Every conversation you start in Joule is accessible from any Joule-enabled application. A conversation you began in Report Management can be continued from Environment or Process Management without losing context — and vice versa.
- Cross-application actions – You can ask Joule to perform actions on a different screen than the one you are currently on. For example, while working in Environment, you can ask Joule to create a process instance in Process Management — without navigating away from the current screen.
Joule in the Environment Application
The Environment screen displays the full list of available environments in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model, organized in a tree structure of nodes and environments. With Joule, you can explore, create, and manage both nodes and environments through natural language conversation.
Asking Questions (Ask Mode)
In Ask mode, Joule helps you explore and understand your environments and nodes. Ask it to list, filter, or describe environments based on any criteria.
Example questions:
- “List all private environments.”
- “Show me all environments in the RMS node.”
- “List environments containing reports.”
- “What actions can I perform in the Environment application?”
The last example is particularly useful: ask Joule what it can do in the current application, and it will describe all available capabilities in full.
Taking Actions (Act Mode)
In Act mode, Joule can perform the following operations in the Environment application:
- Create environment/node – Specify the name, description, and other properties. You can create up to 50 environments in a single request; for larger quantities, Joule executes in multiple batches, each requiring your approval.
- Edit environment/node – Update the description of an environment or node.
- Move environment/node – Relocate an environment or node to a different parent node in the tree.
- Copy environment – Create a copy of an existing environment with a new ID and version.
- Mark as private or public – Change the access level between Public (visible to all users) and Private (restricted to authorized teams only).
- Assign a team – Set or update which teams are authorized to access a private environment.
- Delete environment/node – Remove an environment or an empty node. Because this is a destructive action, Joule lists exactly what will be deleted and asks for your explicit confirmation before proceeding.
Note: Joule inherits your role assignments. For example, if you hold the ENVIRONMENTS_READ role only, Joule can view environments but cannot create, edit, or delete them.
Joule in the Process Management Application
The Process Management screen displays all process instances in a table, along with a Gantt diagram for visualizing timelines. With Joule, you can explore your process data and manage instances and activities through natural language conversation.
Asking Questions (Ask Mode)
In Ask mode, Joule helps you navigate and understand your process data. You can ask about templates, instances, activities, parameters, states, assigned teams, or any other process-related information.
Example questions:
- “List all deployed process instances in the BAC environment, version 0001.”
- “What is the current state of the Monthly_Close_May process?”
- “Show me all activities assigned to Team_A.”
- “What are the parameters configured for process instance PROC06?”
Taking Actions (Act Mode)
In Act mode, Joule can perform the following operations on your process instances and activities:
- Create process instance from a template – Specify the template, process ID, description, type (Run or Simulation), and start date. You can create up to 50 instances at once; for larger quantities, Joule executes in multiple batches, each requiring your approval.
- Create process instance from an existing instance – Clone an existing process instance as the starting point for the new one, inheriting its configuration.
- Create process instance with adjusted selections and parameters – Fine-tune selections and parameter values when creating a new instance, without having to edit each field afterward through the UI.
- Edit an activity – Update the state, performer team, reviewer team, start date, or end date of an activity.
- Edit a process instance – Update the description, state, type (Run or Simulation), or start date of a process instance.
Note: Joule inherits your role assignments. For example, if you hold the PROCESSES_OWN role only, Joule can manage only your own process instances.
Closing Thoughts
Joule in SAP Profitability and Performance Management Cloud Standard Model is now available across Report Management, Environment and Process Management applications. All capabilities are authorization-aware and operate within your existing user permissions.
Whether you are setting up new environments for a planning cycle, managing process instance activities, or analyzing report data, Joule is there to help you work faster and more confidently — all through natural language.
