Executive summary

On Sept 24th, we kicked off our webinar series on SAP Signavio and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) with the session “The Autonomous Supply Chain Isn’t a Destination — It’s a Transformation Capability.” SAP experts Gunther Sanchez, Timm Hemmert, and Dominik Lehmann shared how supply chain leaders can move from reactive, siloed operations toward a more connected, AI-enabled operating model.

The key message was clear: volatility is now the baseline. Demand uncertainty, trade disruptions, rising costs, and higher customer expectations are putting traditional supply chain models under pressure. AI can help, but the starting point is process transparency — understanding where value is trapped, where bottlenecks occur, and where improvement efforts will have the greatest impact.

Why this matters now

Many supply chain teams still rely on manual work, fragmented systems, and limited end-to-end visibility. This makes it difficult to anticipate issues and often leaves teams firefighting instead of improving performance.

Organizations that invest in process transparency, resilience, and AI-enabled transformation can build a strong competitive advantage. Those that wait risk falling further behind as the gap between reactive and proactive operations grows.

What does the Autonomous Supply Chain mean in practice

The autonomous supply chain is not about replacing people. It is about helping people make better, faster decisions with support from AI assistants and agents.

Figure 2: Autonomous SCM helps you deliver on core objectives — from managing uncertainty
to driving efficiency and compliance.

In this model, people continue to set goals, define business rules, approve critical decisions, and manage exceptions. AI supports recurring decisions, monitors process performance, identifies deviations, recommends actions, and executes defined tasks within governed boundaries.

The value comes from connecting signals across planning, inventory, procurement, production, transportation, warehousing, and customer commitments — so teams can move from reactive exception handling to predictive, coordinated operations.

Three high-value opportunity areas

Supply chain transformation leaders often see the greatest potential in three areas.

Figure 3: Three key areas where AI, contextual business data, and end-to-end applications create the most impact.

1. Enhance Planning Performance

Planning teams need to balance inventory, service levels, and cost while dealing with uncertain demand and supply volatility.

SAP Signavio Process Intelligence helps uncover where planning issues originate and why, enabling teams to improve forecast accuracy, reduce stale inventory, and make better cost-service-risk decisions.

2. Optimize Warehouse Operations

Warehouse inefficiencies quickly become customer issues. Bottlenecks in putaway, picking, packing, goods issue posting, and shift execution can increase costs and affect service levels.

By mining SAP EWM processes end to end, SAP Signavio helps teams identify delays, improve throughput, reduce stock-out risks, and lower operating costs.

3. Streamline Transportation Management

Transportation remains one of the most visible and volatile supply chain cost areas.

SAP Signavio Process Intelligence connects to SAP Transportation Management to reveal process deviations, manual interventions, automation gaps, and invoice discrepancies — creating a stronger foundation for data-driven transportation decisions.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

From reactive firefighting to proactive process control

A major takeaway from the session was the importance of understanding processes before applying AI. Real-time visibility into open tasks, bottlenecks, and process deviations helps teams act earlier and resolve issues faster.

As Dominik noted: “You should not start with AI. AI should be second. First should be that you really understand how your business processes look, where they are doing well, where they are not doing well.”

Once teams understand the root causes, they can select AI and agent use cases based on value, feasibility, and business priorities.

Real results from real customers

The session highlighted several customer examples showing the impact of process transparency and continuous transformation.

Figure 4: Three companies driving supply chain excellence with SAP Signavio — real challenges, real improvements, real results.

  • Takeda reduced annual supply chain working hours by more than 10% by addressing fragmented global processes and excessive customization.
  • One TCC used SAP Signavio during a rapid SAP S/4HANA transformation, completing ERP implementation from planning to go-live in 67 days.
  • ElAraby  identified US$55.2 million in value from process improvements by tackling data silos and manual work.
  • SHL Medical improved warehouse visibility, reduced issue resolution cycles from about six months to about one month, and gained 24/7 insight into open tasks, bottlenecks, and deviations.

As SHL medical’s Global Process Excellence lead put it: “Using the SAP Signavio portfolio is the difference between being reactive and proactive. Instead of constantly firefighting, we now understand what is happening in our processes and act before issues escalate.”

How to get started

SAP Signavio Professional Services outlined a practical four-step approach to turning process insights into AI-enabled transformation:

  • Identify and validate value: Use SAP Signavio Process Intelligence to find inefficiencies, blockers, and bottlenecks.
  • Run an AI Discovery Workshop: Prioritize use cases based on business value, feasibility, and readiness.
  • Run an AI Design Workshop: Define the agent profile, including triggers, context, objectives, boundaries, and approval points.
  • Create the roadmap: Check whether standard SAP solutions fit the use case or define requirements for custom agent development.

This is not a one-time project. It is a continuous improvement cycle.
