If you are new to this blog , consider having a look at Product interchangeability overview and its highlights here: Product Interchangeability in S/4HANA

This blog provides an overview of exclusions and highlights the role of exit indicators in Product Interchangeability.

In real-world business scenarios, not every valid substitute should always be considered during product substitution.

There may be situations where certain successor products are no longer approved for sale, where a product transition should stop at a specific point in the lifecycle, or where quality and regulatory concerns require particular products to be excluded from consideration.

To address such requirements, Product Interchangeability framework provides two powerful capabilities:

  • Exit Indicators
  • Product Exclusions

Exit Indicators

The Product Interchangeability framework supports Exit Indicators, enabling the system to stop supersession chain traversal at predefined points.

This functionality helps organizations control substitution determination according to business requirements. The solution allows the maintenance of backward exit indicators and forward exit indicators for bi-directional chains

Forward Exit Indicator

A Forward Exit Indicator stops chain traversal while moving in the forward direction.

Example : Consider the below supersession chain with a forward exit indicator defined

Shilpa_D_0-1791996085615.Png

A forward exit indicator exists between XX-PRD-V2 and XX-PRD-V3

For input product XX-PRD-V1, traversal stops at XX-PRD-V3. Products beyond this point are disregarded.

Valid substitutes returned:

  • XX-PRD-V2
  • XX-PRD-V3

Backward Exit Indicator

A Backward Exit Indicator stops traversal while moving in the reverse direction.

Example : Consider the below supersession chain with the backward exit indicator defined.

Shilpa_D_1-1791996172143.Png

A backward exit indicator exists between XX-PRD-V3 and  XX-PRD-V2

For the requested product XX-PRD-V3, traversal stops at XX-PRD-V2. The system disregards earlier predecessor products beyond that point.

Valid substitutes returned:

  • XX-PRD-V2
  • XX-PRD-V4
  • XX-PRD-V5

XX-PRD-V1 is discarded.

Product Exclusions

Product Exclusions allow users to exclude specific products from substitution results without affecting chain traversal.

The Manage Product Exclusions application can be used to maintain these exclusions.

Example: Consider the below supersession chain and product XX-PRD-V4 is excluded due to quality issues in the current stock.

Shilpa_D_2-1791996298270.Png

For requested product XX-PRD-V2, the valid substitutes become:

  • XX-PRD-V1
  • XX-PRD-V3
  • XX-PRD-V5

XX-PRD-V4 is excluded

Exit Indicators vs. Exclusions

Feature

Behaviour

Exit Indicator

Stops chain traversal at a specific point

Product Exclusion

Skips selected products while continuing traversal

While Exit Indicators control chain traversal, Product Exclusions allows specific products to be removed from the substitution result while the system continues to evaluate the remaining chain.

Conclusion

Exit Indicators and Product Exclusions provide fine-grained control over substitute determination and help organizations align product replacement strategies with operational requirements.
