When our team started looking at how we handle knowledge transfer, one thing became clear: the expertise existed, it just lived in people's heads.
SAP GTS Preference Management is a specialist topic. It sits at the intersection of global trade compliance and supply chain operations, and mastering it takes time, experience, and access to the right guidance. Onboarding a new colleague used to mean leaning heavily on whoever happened to be available. Solving a tricky customer case meant digging through scattered resources or relying on tribal knowledge. We knew we could do better.
The Project
Over the past months, our team took on an ambitious documentation initiative: building a comprehensive, structured wiki dedicated entirely to SAP GTS Preference Management. Around 30 pages, covering concepts, processes, configuration, and common pitfalls, now form a living knowledge base that anyone on the team or any interested customer can access.
The goals were straightforward:
- Support new colleagues with a reliable starting point, so they can get up to speed faster.
- Raise our collective knowledge level by making expert insight visible and searchable.
- Create a centralized resource that is accessible not just internally, but also to our customers who want to understand the subject more deeply.
Why It Matters
Preference Management in SAP GTS is not a topic with a lot of readily available, consolidated documentation in the community. Customers navigating supplier declarations or preferential origin calculations often find themselves in need of additional information. Our goal was to change that, at least within our sphere of influence.
What made this project genuinely exciting was the participant's enthusiasm. This was not a top-down mandate. People contributed because they saw the value, because they wanted to leave things better than they found them, and because sharing knowledge is part of how this community grows.
Early Results
The real test of any knowledge base is whether people actually use it. We did not have to wait long for an answer.
We have already been able to reference the wiki directly when working through customer cases. Having a well-structured, reliable resource to consult and to share with customers has already made a tangible difference in how we work. That is the metric we care about most.
An Invitation
If you work with SAP GTS Preference Management, whether as a customer, a consultant, or a fellow support engineer, we hope this resource is useful to you. And if you have knowledge to contribute, perspectives to add, or feedback on what would make it even better, we would love to hear from you.
