Please refer to SSC Master data Setup and FFF Class Master data Setup in order to understand product interchangeability master data , if you haven't already. The below blog explores, in depth the data checks and validations implemented to ensure reliable interchangeability master data.
Product Interchangeability master data serves as the foundation for processes such as Advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP), Extended Service Parts Planning (eSPP), and Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS). Inaccurate or inconsistent data can lead to incorrect substitute determination, planning exceptions, and fulfillment issues.
To help organizations maintain reliable and consistent master data, Product Interchangeability provides a comprehensive framework of built-in consistency checks and validation mechanisms.
Why Data Validation Matters?
Product substitution decisions directly impact planning, inventory consumption, and customer order fulfillment.Without appropriate validation controls, inconsistencies can lead to unexpected business outcomes and operational inefficiencies.
To address these challenges, Product Interchangeability validates master data during creation and modification helping organizations maintain a trusted source of substitution information.
The below section provides a brief overview on the existing checks for different consuming applications.
Checks within the collection
Duplicate predecessors and successors are not allowed
Example: The below case is not allowed as there are duplicate predecessors within a single collection
Cyclic chains are not allowed
Example: The below case is not allowed as the substitutions are cyclic in nature
Disjoint chains are not allowed
Example: Disconnected substitution chains within the collection are not permitted
Gaps in Validity Periods are not allowed
Substitutions must form a continuous chain of validities without time gaps.
Example: The chains have a time gap in between their validities(C to D) causing discontinuity, which is not permitted
Inconsistent Locations
All substitutions within a supersession collection must maintain the same set of locations.
Example: In the below shown case, the third substitution has a different location maintained in comparison with the first two substitution, violating the above-mentioned check.
Advanced ATP Checks
- Groups are mandatory.
- Products belonging to an FFF Class cannot participate in the same SSC collection when group relevancy overlaps
eSPP Checks
- Products already assigned to an FFF Class cannot simultaneously participate in the same SSC collection.
PP/DS Checks
- Only products relevant for Advanced Planning are allowed.
- Plant and MRP Area attributes are mandatory
Cross Collection Checks
Cyclic chains are not allowed
Example: The below case is not allowed as the substitutions are cyclic in nature
Additional Advanced ATP Check
A product cannot belong to multiple FFF classes with overlapping group relevance.
Additional eSPP Checks
A product cannot belong to multiple FFF classes.
A product cannot act as predecessor across multiple collections
Additional PP/DS Checks
A product cannot be a predecessor across multiple collections for the same location.
Conclusion
These validations ensure clean, consistent, and reliable master data that can be safely consumed by planning and fulfillment applications.
