Early in my career, I sat in a room full of architects debating a major platform decision. The conversation covered integration patterns, application landscapes, and total cost of ownership. No one discussed the data. Not the quality of it, not how it would flow, not how it would be governed. We treated data as the responsibility of someone else (master data team and BW team) in a different meeting. Years later, we are seeing AI initiatives slow down because of untrustworthy data, I understand exactly what was missing from that room.

Data architecture has spent years as a supporting discipline important, but rarely the headline. That has changed. The shift to agentic AI has moved data architecture from a back-office concern to a front-line competitive capability.

Agentic AI systems do not simply retrieve information. They reason, plan, and act. They require data that is real-time, contextually grounded, semantically rich, and governed with precision. An agent operating on stale, fragmented, or poorly modelled data does not just produce mediocre outputs it can produce incorrect actions. At enterprise scale, that is a governance and business risk problem, not just a technical one.

Introducing the Mastering SAP Data Architecture Advanced Course

The Mastering SAP Data Architecture Advanced Learning Journey (course BDCDA2) is now live on learning.sap.com. Some of you might have done ‘Becoming a Data Architect – Foundational Course’ which was launched last year and this new course takes a deeper look at the topics related to Data Architecture.

Across four-unit journey designed for architects who are ready to move beyond foundational concepts and into the architecture decisions, framework synthesis, and platform-specific depth that define effective data leadership in the agentic AI era.

1.  Unit 1: Architecting Data Strategy for the Agentic AI Era

The journey opens with strategy, because that is where most data initiatives fail first. Unit 1 builds the five foundational pillars of data strategy: Governance, Data literacy, Stewardship, Architecture, and Technology enablement and connects each directly to AI readiness. It examines what agentic AI demands from data pipelines that traditional analytics architectures were not built to provide: real-time streaming, semantic enrichment, and contextual grounding. It then moves to leadership and culture, the organizational factors that determine whether a data strategy survives contact with reality and closes with a framework for measuring data strategy success and analyzing real-world value patterns.

1. Unit 2: Integrating Frameworks for Data Architecture

Architecture without a framework produces inconsistency. Unit 2 examines the three frameworks that define the professional standard in this field: TOGAF, DAMA-DMBOK, and the SAP Enterprise Architecture Framework and, guides how to synthesize them rather than apply them in isolation. It then applies that synthesis to two of the most significant architectural paradigms in the market today: Data Mesh and Data Fabric.

1.  Unit 3: Harmonizing SAP Business Data Cloud Within the Open Data Ecosystem

Unit 3 is where strategy and frameworks meet the SAP platform. It begins with BDC Connect and the Delta Sharing protocol the mechanism that enables zero-copy data sharing across ecosystem boundaries and then works through each major integration scenario in the open data ecosystem: Databricks, Snowflake (including all three connectivity options), Microsoft Fabric, and Google Big Query. The unit closes with a dedicated lesson on data federation performance optimization the practical trade-offs between federation, replication, and zero-copy sharing that every architect advising on SAP Business Data Cloud deployments needs to understand cold.

1. Unit 4: Designing Advanced Data Models and Architecture for SAP Business Data Cloud

The final unit addresses SAP Business Data Cloud as a Business Data Fabric how it implements federation, replication, and zero-copy sharing to connect heterogeneous data sources while preserving business context and semantic coherence. It covers Data Mesh in SAP BDC, including how Datasphere Spaces implement the four Data Mesh principles in practice. It then moves to one of the most consequential topics in enterprise AI architecture: semantic models and knowledge graphs as the foundation for trustworthy AI and RAG-based systems.

 Introducing the SAP Certified Data Architect Certification

Alongside the learning journey, we have launched the SAP Certified Data Architect certification.

The SAP Certified Data Architect is an AI role-play-based certification that assesses how well candidates understand modern data architecture in the context of strategic business success. It covers the five major architectural paradigms: Data Warehouse, Data Lake, Data Mesh, Data Fabric, and Data Lakehouse, alongside the core elements of data maturity: governance frameworks, data security, and business-aligned data strategy. It uses interactive question-and-answer format, assessing the understanding of SAP Data Architecture in the agentic AI era specifically the ability to synthesize and articulate how SAP Business Data Cloud enables governed, semantically coherent data access across hybrid cloud environments.

A Final Thought

In the agentic AI era, the constraint on enterprise intelligence is rarely the algorithm. It is the architecture underneath it the decisions made about how data is structured, governed, connected, and made meaningful. Those decisions require a specific set of skills. This learning journey and certification exist to build them.
