Organizational hierarchies are the backbone of financial reporting in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. A well-structured Profit Center Hierarchy and Cost Center Hierarchy enables management reporting, cost allocation, profitability analysis, and internal controlling across your enterprise.
In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition release 2602, both hierarchies are maintained through SAP Fiori apps and Business Configuration (BC) activities — no more transaction codes like KCH5 or KSH1. There is no standard Migration Cockpit object available for migrating cost center or profit center hierarchies. This blog walks you through creating and maintaining both hierarchies from scratch, step by step.

What Is a Profit Center Hierarchy?
A Profit Center Hierarchy (also called the Standard Hierarchy for Profit Centers) is a tree structure that organizes all your profit centers into logical groups — by region, business unit, product line, or any dimension meaningful to your business. SAP requires every profit center to belong to the standard hierarchy.
Step 1: Open Business Configuration
- Log in to your SAP Fiori Launchpad.
- Search for the app “Business Configuration” or navigate via: Fiori Launchpad > Finance > Business Configuration
- In the search box, type: “Profit Center”
- Select the activity: “Define Standard Hierarchy for Profit Centers”
Step 2: Set the Standard Hierarchy Name
- Click “Edit” on the configuration activity.
- In the field Standard Hierarchy, enter a meaningful name. Example: PC_STD_HIER — Use uppercase, no spaces, max 12 characters.
- Click “Save”.
Best Practice: Use a naming convention that reflects your company. For example,
Step 3: Access the Manage Profit Center Groups App
- From the Fiori Launchpad, search for “Manage Profit Center Groups”.
- Alternatively navigate to: Finance > Controlling > Profit Center Accounting > Manage Profit Center Groups
- The app opens showing the root node of your standard hierarchy.
Step 4: Create Hierarchy Root Node
- The Root Node is automatically created using the Standard Hierarchy name you defined (e.g., PC_STD_HIER).
- Click on the root node to expand it.
- You will see it is empty — ready for child nodes.
Step 5: Create Hierarchy Nodes (Groups)
Hierarchy nodes act as folders that group related profit centers.
Example Hierarchy Structure:
PC_STD_HIER (Root)
|– PC_AMERICAS
| |– PC_USA
| +– PC_CANADA
|– PC_EUROPE
| |– PC_GERMANY
| +– PC_UK
+– PC_APAC
|– PC_INDIA
+– PC_AUSTRALIA
To create a node:
- Click the root node to select it.
- Click “Create Child Node” (or the “+” icon).
- Enter the required fields (see table below).
- Click “Save”.
- Repeat for each top-level node (e.g., PC_EUROPE, PC_APAC).

To create sub-nodes: click on the parent node, then “Create Child Node”, fill in details, and save.
Step 6: Create Profit Centers and Assign to Hierarchy
- Search for “Manage Profit Centers” on the Fiori Launchpad.
- Click “Create”.
- Fill in the required fields (see table below).
- Click “Save”.

Step 7: Verify the Profit Center Hierarchy
- Open “Manage Profit Center Groups”.
- Navigate through the tree to confirm all nodes and profit centers are correctly placed.
- Use the “Search” function to locate individual profit centers.
- Cross-check: every profit center must appear as a leaf node under the hierarchy.
