In this month's update, we're focusing on asset reliability engineering. SAP Asset Performance Management 2606 helps reliability teams keep assessments up to date with new reassessment capabilities, keep track of roles and responsibilities, and prioritize the most important recommendations.

Now, let's take a closer look at APM 2606.
Reliability assessments are only valuable if they continue to reflect the realities of the assets they support.
Assets age. Operating conditions change. Maintenance teams gain experience. New failure patterns emerge. Manufacturers publish updated recommendations. Yet many FMEA and maintenance strategy assessments remain largely unchanged after they are first created.
The challenge for reliability teams is not only to create assessments, but to keep them relevant over time (by reassessing them)!
Why Reassessment Matters
Whether you're performing an FMEA or defining a maintenance strategy, the objective is the same: making informed decisions that improve reliability, reduce risk, and optimize maintenance activities.
However, these decisions should not be based solely on the information available when an assessment was first created. As assets operate, organizations gain valuable insights from inspections, maintenance activities, operational experience, and lessons learned.
Regular reassessment provides an opportunity to review existing assumptions, validate maintenance strategies, and incorporate new knowledge into the decision-making process.
Reassessment: Reviewing and Updating Existing Assessments
To support this continuous improvement process, SAP Asset Performance Management now introduces reassessment capabilities for both FMEA Assessments and Strategy Assessments for Classes.
Reassessment enables teams to formally review and revise existing assessments while maintaining a clear history of changes over time. Rather than creating new assessments from scratch, organizations can build upon existing work, preserving valuable context while ensuring assessments remain aligned with current operating realities.
This approach helps organizations:
- Continuously improve maintenance strategies and failure analyses
- Incorporate operational experience and lessons learned
- Adapt to changing asset conditions and business requirements
- Maintain traceability of assessment changes and decisions

Capturing the Right Expertise
Successful reliability assessments depend on more than methodology alone. They also depend on involving the right people.
Operators, maintenance technicians, planners, supervisors, reliability engineers, and subject matter experts all contribute valuable perspectives that influence assessment outcomes.
To support this collaboration, you can now define and manage participants and roles directly within both FMEA and Strategy Assessments.
By documenting who was involved and what responsibilities they held, organizations gain greater transparency, accountability, and consistency throughout the assessment process. At the same time, valuable knowledge is preserved for future reviews and reassessments.

Classify recommendations by importance and obligation to improve maintenance prioritization
When maintenance teams manage large numbers of recommendations, it can be difficult to identify which actions are critical to asset integrity and which are mandatory for compliance or operational reasons.
SAP Asset Performance Management now enables reliability engineers to classify recommendations as Critical and Obligatory, helping teams prioritize the work that matters most.
The Challenge
Not all recommendations carry the same level of risk, urgency, or business impact. However, when recommendations appear similar, critical maintenance activities can be overlooked or delayed.
Common challenges include:
- Critical and routine recommendations being treated with the same priority
- Mandatory maintenance work not being clearly identified
- Difficulty focusing resources on the actions that matter most
- Increased risk of compliance-related or integrity-related work being missed
The Solution
SAP Asset Performance Management introduces two configurable classifications for recommendations:
Integrity Criticality
Integrity Criticality indicates how important a recommended maintenance action is for maintaining the physical and operational integrity of an asset. Reliability engineers can assign an integrity criticality level to provide additional context for planning and prioritization.
Obligation Relevance
Obligation Relevance identifies whether a recommendation is driven by compliance, regulatory, contractual, or operational requirements. One or more obligation values can be assigned to indicate why a recommendation must be completed.
Together, these classifications provide greater visibility into the importance and purpose of maintenance recommendations, enabling more informed decision-making.
