At SAP Sapphire 2026, it became clear that SAP is not just evolving ERP. It's rethinking how enterprises operate. The Autonomous Enterprise is more than a new label. It reflects a shift toward systems that can actively drive outcomes using agentic AI. It changes how enterprise landscapes are designed, governed, and run.

SAP's Evolution Towards Agentic AI

From an architectural standpoint, SAP’s journey reflects a deliberate and well‑orchestrated evolution—from foundational systems to intelligence, and now toward autonomy:

  • R/3 era: Built the foundation with client-server architecture
  • ECC era: Expanded into a digital core, integrating end-to-end business processes
  • S/4HANA era: Transformed performance with in-memory computing (HANA)
  • Today: Moving to cloud operations powered by data and AI, unifying applications and insights
  • Next: Evolving into the Autonomous Enterprise, where agentic AI systems help run business processes

The foundation is already in place. In most organizations, ERP remains the most valuable source of data that AI and agents can use to drive better decisions.

However, moving from cloud ERP to a more agent-driven ERP is not a simple shift. It requires the right foundation across data, development, and governance. This is exactly where SAP is focusing.

From Complex Deployments To Simple Strategy

If you’ve moved from ECC to S/4HANA, you’re on the right path. If you’ve taken the next step and moved S/4HANA to the cloud, you’re already ahead of many organizations. And if you’re layering in the tools and capabilities needed to bring AI into your ERP landscape, you’re not just keeping up—you’re positioning your enterprise for what’s next.

What SAP is doing now is bringing together capabilities that were previously spread across different areas:

  • BTP (Business Technology Platform): the foundation for apps, integration, and AI
  • Business Data Cloud (BDC): a unified data layer connecting SAP and non-SAP data
  • All combined into one: The SAP Business AI Platform

This platform connects tools, applications, processes, and data into one cohesive environment. In simple terms, SAP is moving away from a collection of separate tools toward a single platform that can support both today’s needs and the future vision of autonomous operations.

SAP Business AI Platform introduces a simplified, strategic architecture built around three core layers—build, context, and governance—designed to make agentic AI scalable, reliable, and enterprise-ready.

With the Business AI Platform, organizations now have everything they need to build agents. The next step is understanding how those agents actually come together to get work done in an agent-driven environment.

The Autonomous Execution

From a user perspective, this is designed to feel simple and intuitive. A business user works through Joule Work using natural language, asking questions or triggering actions, while the complexity of agentic AI stays behind the scenes.

Users get clear insights, recommendations, and outcomes, without having to manage processes, systems, or integrations. The experience is focused on getting work done, while the orchestration and execution are handled invisibly in the background.

In the example above, the Sourcing Manager interacts with Joule Work at the top, which acts as the entry point. Behind that, a Sourcing Assistant coordinates multiple domain agents across finance, procurement, customer experience, and HR.

Each of these agents is tied to a specific Joule persona and executes predefined scenarios such as creating a purchase requisition or detecting a supply chain delay. These scenarios access enterprise data from different domains like finance, spend, supply chain, HR, and customer experience.

The agents collaborate, retrieve data, and execute workflows across systems, but all of that activity remains abstracted from the user, who only sees the final outcome and any relevant information needed to make decisions.

The Key Takeaways

  • SAP Autonomous Enterprise is the evolution from Cloud ERP to Agentic ERP
  • SAP Business AI Platform is the platform for building, contextualizing, and governing AI
  • SAP isn't just layering AI on ERP they are reimagining the future of how work is done
  • Organizations that have adopted SAP S/4HANA and Cloud are well positioned
