If you work with SAP Advanced Financial Closing (AFC), you know that task models are at the heart of your closing process. They define what needs to happen, how jobs are triggered, and which applications are called during your financial close. With the new central task model management, we are bringing the creation and maintenance of these task models directly into the hands of business users — right within AFC.

With central task model management, SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud customers now have full flexibility to create and maintain their own task models independently. Business users can get started right away — adding missing tasks, adjusting existing models by copying them to customer namespace, and maintaining parameters on their own terms.

For SAP S/4 HANA Cloud private Edition and SAP S/4 HANA OnPremise, the benefit is equally significant: what previously required direct access to the communication system and IT involvement (system prerequisites apply) within AFC by the business users who know their closing processes best.

With the June 2026 release of SAP Advanced Financial Closing, we are delivering a major milestone: full business user-driven maintenance of task models directly within AFC.

While the display functionality for task models has been available since early 2025, this release takes the next big step. Business users can now create, edit, publish, and delete in customer namespaces — all from a single, central entry point within SAP Advanced Financial Closing, without needing to navigate to the communication system.

It is important to note that the task model data continues to be persisted in the communication system (e.g., SAP S/4HANA). AFC provides the user-friendly interface for maintenance, while the publishing step pushes all changes back to the underlying system.

The enhanced Manage Task Models app enables you to:

  • Define task models for all task types like jobs, SAP Fiori apps, web applications
  • Set up task model types (closing business transaction types) with program or job template assignments, or semantic object and action assignments
  • Register application jobs with parameter mapping — maintain job variants and their parameters directly in AFC
  • Create and assign job variants with fixed or dynamic parameter values
  • Publish changes to make updated task models available for task creation in your task list templates after system synchronization
  • Track changes using the dedicated Task Model Change Log app

All of this is managed through a top-down approach: create the task model first, then assign or create a task model type, and finally assign or create job variants — a streamlined workflow designed for business users rather than system administrators.

Let’s walk through a practical example. Suppose you need to create a new task to process the depreciation run for your company codes.

Step 1: Open the Manage Task Models app

Navigate to the Manage Task Models app and select the communication system in which you want to create the new task model. On the right side, you will see an overview of all existing task models for the selected system. The four tabs — task models, task model types, job variants, and job variant parameters are presented in a clean table format directly in AFC. To begin creating a new task model, click Define Task Models.

Step 2: Create the Task Model

You are now in the creation view. Choose Create and provide the required information: define a Task Model ID with up to 10 characteenter a description for the task, select the communication system, choose the task type (in our example: Job), and specify which closing types this task should be relevant for. Then confirm by choosing Create.

Step 3: Assign a task model type

The new task model has been created successfully, but it does not yet know what to execute. In the next step, assign a t. You have two options: create a new task model type (for example, if the program or Fiori app is not yet part of the pre-delivered task model types) or assign an existing one. In our case, we assign an existing task model type from the pre-delivered task model types.

Step 4: Create a Job Variant

With the task model type assigned, the next step is to create a new j the customer namespace so that you can maintain your own parameter values.

Once created, the full list of parameters of the job is displayed directly in place. Some parameters like check boxes and radio buttons are already pre-set according to the default values of the underlying application job template/program. Some parameters may have parameter types assigned already, based on a heuristic.

From here, click Edit Job Variant.

This navigates you to a dedicated object page of the variant. On this page, you can assign or remove parameter types for each parameter row

Step 5: Maintain Parameters

To maintain parameter values, use Edit Values. Fields can have either a parameter type assigned – or a fix value. That’s why you see the fields with parameter types greyed out in the popup. If the assigned parameter type is of temporal nature, you can apply corresponding temporal rules for the parameter in this dialog, though, to shift it.

Step 6: Publish

Once you have completed the configuration go back to the task model tab, click Publish to persist your new task model in the communication system. The task model — including all linked information such as the task model type and the new job variant is released. You can directly see and verify the result in the “Manage Task Models” app.

Step 7: Synchronization

to make the new task model available for your closing template set up. Go to your Monitor Communication Systems app and select the communication system where you made your changes. Click on synchronize now.

Next to that you are also able to see your changes with the next daily synchronization run based on your system settings.

The benefits are clear:

  • Reduced dependency on IT resources — Business users can independently create and adjust task models, eliminating the need for IT involvement for routine changes.
  • Central comprehensive repository — All task model-related metadata is accessible from a single point within AFC, providing a single source of truth across your connected communication systems.
  • Empowered business users — Display, change, and create task models and related data without leaving the AFC environment.
  • Faster time to value — New closing tasks can be set up and published quickly, keeping your financial close agile and responsive to changing requirements.

User Authorization

To use the new capabilities, the following authorizations are required:

  • Role template AFC_TaskModels_Define must be included on top of AFC
  • A user role for the with the appropriate authorization level (Read, Write, Publish, or Delete) for the corresponding communication system
  • Authorizations in the communication system as described in the documentation

System Requirements

The communication system that the task model is based in may need to fulfill specific requirements:

  • Systems of type SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition: No additional system requirements.
  • Other system types: The system must fulfill specific requirements. For more information, see System-Dependent Feature Availability.

Additionally, in the system setup within the Specify Communication Systems app, you maintain a setting to allow task model management for the respective system.
