Why MCP Is the Missing Link in the AI Agent Era
The way software systems expose their capabilities is undergoing a quiet but fundamental shift. For decades the standard contract was: a human opens a UI, reads it, clicks it. APIs came next — machines calling machines, but still with a human writing the glue code in between. Now a third actor has arrived: the AI agent, capable of reasoning, planning, and acting autonomously across tools it has never seen before.
The challenge is that AI models know how to think but not how to reach. They have no standardised way to discover what a system can do, call it safely, or chain results into a goal. Every integration was bespoke — a custom prompt template here, a hand-rolled function schema there. The ecosystem was fragmented before it even started.
Model Context Protocol (MCP), published by Anthropic in late 2024 and now adopted across the industry, solves this. MCP is an open, transport-agnostic protocol that lets any AI client discover and call tools exposed by any MCP server — with a single, uniform interface. Think of it as USB-C for AI integrations: one connector, any device.
For commerce, the implications are significant. A product catalogue, a shopping cart, a checkout flow — these are all structured, well-understood operations that an AI agent can now navigate, assist with, and automate end-to-end, without a human writing integration code for each new model or use case.
