Product Interchangeability feature is now available in SAP S/4HANA On-Premises and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition starting with 2025 Feature Pack Stack 02 (FPS02). The solution supports key supply chain applications, including Advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP), Extended Service Parts Planning (eSPP), and Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS).
Product Interchangeability enables businesses to replace one product with another across planning and order fulfillment processes. Organizations frequently encounter scenarios where product replacement is required. Examples include:
- Introducing a newer version of a product with enhanced design, functionality, or manufacturing characteristics while ensuring a controlled transition from the predecessor product.
- Replacing products that are being discontinued because of quality concerns or regulatory constraints.
- Managing identical products sourced from multiple suppliers in high-volume environments to optimize inventory consumption.
- Improving order fulfillment rates by automatically proposing alternative products.
All these scenarios can leverage Product Interchangeability master data to automate product substitutions and improve supply chain efficiency.
Core Concepts of Product Interchangeability Master Data
Product Interchangeability Collections
A collection represents a group of product substitutions and can be defined either as:
- A Supersession Chain
- A Form-Fit-Function (FFF) Class
Supersession Chains
A supersession chain represents a sequence of products that can replace one another. Depending on business requirements, the replacement relationship can be:
- Unidirectional (Forward Only)
- Bidirectional (Full)
For example, an older product version replaced by a newer version that incorporates design, functional and technical enhancements can be modelled as below
Supported Substitution Types
Product Interchangeability supports multiple substitution types within a supersession chain, enabling organizations to model a wide range of business scenarios.
1:1 Substitution (1P1P)
A single successor product replaces a predecessor product
Example:
An old product version is fully replaced by a new version. Both products are considered direct replacements.
1:N OR Substitution (1PNPOR)
A single product can be replaced by multiple alternative products.
Example:
A product evolves into two new designs, both of which can independently serve as valid alternatives to the original product
1:N AND Substitution (1PNPAND)
A single product is replaced by a combination of multiple products.
This substitution type is relevant only for eSPP applications and supports forward only replacement.
Example:
A product that was previously available as a single unit is now delivered as a combination of two separate products.
N:1 OR Substitution (NP1POR)
Multiple products can be replaced by a single successor product.
Example:
Several older product designs are consolidated into one new product version.
1:0 Substitution (1P0P)
A product has no successor and has reached the end of its lifecycle.
Example:
A product has reached its end in the product chain and is no longer replaced by any successor products.
Form-Fit-Function (FFF) Class
While Supersession Chains model lifecycle transition, a Form-Fit-Function (FFF) Class represents a group of fully interchangeable products that are identical in form, fit, and function.
For example products sourced from different vendors but meeting identical specifications can belong to the same FFF class.
Unlike Supersession Chains, FFF Classes do not represent product evolution. Instead, all products within the class are considered equally interchangeable making the direction of replacement inherently full.
FFF classes do not have validity periods associated with them
MPN: Manufacturer Part Number (Product ID)
FFF Subsets
An FFF subset is a location-specific group derived from a global FFF class.
FFF subsets are particularly useful in service parts planning scenarios where demand consolidation must be performed for a specific plant or MRP area.
By defining subsets, organizations can maintain local planning data while still benefiting from a globally managed FFF class structure
Conclusion
Product Interchangeability in SAP S/4HANA provides a flexible framework for managing product replacements across planning and order fulfillment processes. Through supersession chains, FFF classes, and multiple substitution types, organizations can address product lifecycle transitions, inventory optimization, supplier diversification, and order fulfillment challenges in a structured and scalable manner.
