As organizations manage increasingly complex product substitution networks, ensuring the quality and consistency of Product Interchangeability master data becomes critical. Incorrect or incomplete master data can lead to planning inaccuracies, fulfilment challenges, and unexpected substitution behaviour.
To help organizations maintain high-quality master data while adapting to unique business requirements, Product Interchangeability introduces Configurable Validations.
This capability provides the flexibility to tailor consistency checks according to specific business requirements.
Why Configurable Validations?
Every organization follows different governance practices.
For example:
- Some organizations require strict control over product assignment in substitutions
- Certain validations may be mandatory for planning scenarios but optional for aATP processes.
Configurable Validations allow organizations to determine which business rules should be enforced and how validation results should be treated during master data maintenance.
Starting with the SAP S/4HANA 2025 FPS02 release, seven standard validations are available for configuration
Available Validation Rules for Configuration
S_V1: A product can belong to only one supersession chain
Example: A Product can belong only to one collection, maintenance across collection is not allowed as per the validation rule.
S_V2: Product-Location Combination Can Belong to Only One Supersession Chain
Example: A Product location combination cannot repeat across collection
S_V3: Atomic Substitution Must Belong to One Supersession Chain Collection
Example: Each substitution relationship must be unique across the system
S_V4: Location-Specific Atomic Substitution Must Belong to One Collection
Example: The same substitution and location combination cannot exist in multiple collections
S_V5: The product and substitute must have the same unit of measure
Example: Both products participating in a substitution must use the same base unit of measure
S_V6: The leading product must be the same across all subsets in a collection
Example: The same lead product must be maintained across all subsets within a Form-Fit-Function (FFF) collection
S_V7: Group Assignment Is Not Allowed
This validation prevents group assignments to collections.
Note: S_V7 cannot be configured for aATP because Group Assignment is mandatory for aATP relevant collections
Validation Configuration
For each consuming application, users can configure message severity. The configuration is available at: IMG Path: IMG/Cross-Application Components/ Advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP)/Product Interchangeability/Configure Consistency Checks/Maintain Validations for applications
Message Severity Options
Note: Not maintaining an entry for the validations in any of the consuming applications, does not trigger the validation
Conclusion
Configurable validations enable organizations to enforce data quality standards tailored to individual application requirements while maintaining flexibility across business processes.
