SAP Traceability Hub – Release Updates 2605 and Be…

Welcome to this blog post. In my first post, I outlined  how life sciences companies can modernize their serialization and track-and-trace operations using SAP Traceability Hub Repository. Now, let's look at the highlights of our 2605 release:

The solution launched in November 2025 (release 2511) targeted dispensers with the ability to receive and verify serialized data. Release 2605 significantly expands the scope to target Marketing Authorization Holders (MAHs), the brand owners responsible for regulatory reporting and supply chain notifications.

1. Serial Number Management

One important new capability in 2605 is end-to-end serial number management. Companies can now generate, manage, and distribute serial numbers directly from the repository without the need for an external system.

This closes a critical gap: previously, the repository only accepted serial numbers from external sources. Now it is the authoritative source of truth for serial number issuance.

2. EPCIS Inbound Processing and Repository Capture

Once a production site has used its serial numbers, it sends a GS1 EPCIS message back to the THR inbound interface. The repository processes and stores commissioning events, aggregation events, and receiving events while validating that the serial numbers in the message match those that were issued. The Monitor Messages application provides full visibility into inbound message status, processing logs, and validation results. The serial number lifecycle is tracked end to end.

3. US DSCSA Regulatory Reporting

For products assigned to US markets, THR supports US DSCSA 1.3 compliance reporting. When a shipping event is posted and the trigger is applied, the system creates a reporting event containing the full EPCIS payload required by the regulation: commissioning events for the SGTIN and SSCC, the aggregation/packing event, and the shipping event itself. This reporting event is passed through SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity to the downstream supply chain partner. The full message content is available for download and audit directly from the repository.

4. EU FMD Reporting

For products assigned to EU markets, THR similarly supports reporting to the EU Hub via SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity. Commissioning and decommissioning events are reported in EU FMD layout, with full response handling and processing logs available in the repository.

GXP Readiness: Built for Pharma Validation Requirements

From the first release, SAP Traceability Hub has been developed and operated in a GXP-compliant manner. The GXP Readiness service provides customers with documented evidence of SAP's quality management system and development practices, supporting customers' own validation and qualification activities. This includes:

  • Development and operations in a qualified state
  • Support for customers' GXP compliance requirements
  • The right to audit SAP's quality management system, including change management documentation, within a mutually agreed scope

For pharma companies accustomed to the validation overhead of on-premise or private cloud deployments, this is a meaningful differentiator of the public cloud model.

  Road Map: What's Coming Next

  Release 2611 (November 2026)

  • CMO Serial Number Scenario: A Contract Manufacturing Organization running its own THR instance will be able to request serial numbers directly from an MAH's THR instance, enabling the B2B serial number exchange pattern that is common in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Serial Number Request Monitoring app: Visibility into all serial number requests across the system.
  • Reporting Automation: Rules-based automation to trigger regulatory reporting in the background, removing the need for manual trigger actions.
  • Expanded Country Coverage: Middle East markets including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt and more, leveraging content already built in the SAP Traceability Hub Connectivity.
  • ERP Integration (Private Cloud): Integration with S/4HANA Private Cloud via the existing ATTP integration add-on, adapted for the THR repository. Includes warehouse toolbox integration, master data integration, and business document/batch integration.

  2027 Outlook

We plan to expand Traceability Hub with public cloud ERP integration for life sciences, broader country coverage, more customization options, additional utility apps, and AI-powered capabilities for serialization data reconciliation and error analysis.

Conclusion

SAP Traceability Hub Repository offers a compelling path for pharmaceutical companies seeking a cloud-native, GXP-ready serialization solution without the infrastructure and customization overhead of a private cloud deployment. Release 2605 marks a significant step forward – from a receiver-side MVP to a full MAH-grade solution with serial number management, EPCIS processing, and regulatory reporting for the two largest markets. The road map ahead is ambitious: CMO scenarios, ERP integration, expanded country coverage, and AI-driven automation are all on the near-term horizon.

For companies that run standardized processes, need a fast time to value and want cloud-native scaling, this is the moment to engage seriously with the solution.
