Batch management is a critical discipline for any warehouse operation handling products where traceability, shelf life, or lot control matter — think food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, or automotive parts. Getting it right means having accurate, consistent batch data across every step of the inbound and outbound process, without manual workarounds or system errors slowing your team down.
With the latest releases of SAP Logistics Management, we have added three new features with regards to batch management. This blog post highlights three new capabilities that together close important gaps in the inbound and outbound process and provide more flexibility and control when working with batch-managed products.
1. Immediate Batch Replication: No More Missing Master Data Errors
The challenge
In a typical setup, batch master data originates in SAP S/4HANA and is replicated to SAP Logistics Management. But what happens when a new inbound delivery arrives referencing a batch that was just created in S/4HANA but the replication hasn't happened yet? Until now, this timing gap could cause logistical demand creation to fail with a missing batch master data error, requiring manual intervention to resolve.
What's new
Batch replication is now triggered automatically and immediately when SAP Logistics Management detects that an inbound logistical demand references a batch that does not yet exist locally. Rather than waiting for the next scheduled replication cycle, SAP Logistics Management replicates the batch on the fly and activates the logistical demand so receiving can start.
Why it matters
This enhancement eliminates a common source of inbound processing errors in batch-intensive environments. Warehouse clerks no longer need to monitor for failed logistical demands caused by master data timing issues or manually trigger batch replications. The process simply works — reliably and transparently.
2. Create Batch during Inbound Processing: Flexibility at Goods Receipt
The challenge
Not every inbound scenario starts with a pre-existing batch in S/4HANA. In some industries and processes, batches are created at the point of goods receipt, for example, when a supplier does not manage batch numbers, or when the batch is defined based on the actual delivery. Previously, it was not possible in SAP Logistics Management to enter a batch during the receiving process.
What's new
You can now *create a batch directly from the Manage Inbound Warehouse Request app in SAP Logistics Management. A dedicated “Create Batch” dialog allows warehouse staff to enter the relevant batch information including batch number, supplier batch, date of manufacture, shelf life expiration date, and country of origin, right at the point of inbound processing.
The batch is created synchronously in S/4HANA and transferred to SAP Logistics Management, keeping both systems consistent from the moment the batch comes into existence. Both internal and external batch number ranges are supported, giving you the flexibility to align with your organization's numbering approach.
Why it matters
This feature removes a significant friction point in inbound scenarios where batch information is only known at the time of delivery. Warehouse staff can handle the full inbound process including batch creation without leaving the app or switching to a different system. It reduces errors, speeds up goods receipt, and keeps operations flowing.
3. Batch Split Items: Fulfilling Deliveries Across Multiple Batches
The challenge
In real-world warehouse operations, it is common for a single delivery item to be fulfilled with more than one batch. A customer orders 200 units of a product, but available stock is spread across three different batches. Managing this scenario accurately at both the logistics and inventory level requires a clear structure for tracking which quantity comes from which batch.
What's new
SAP Logistics Management now supports batch split items using a subitem structure in both Logistical Demand and Outbound Warehouse Request objects. If there is a delivery with batch split items created in S/4HANA, it can now be replicated and processes in SAP Logistics Management so you can fulfill a delivery item quantity from multiple batches, with each batch assigned as a separate subitem carrying its own quantity, batch number, and stock details.
Why it matters
Batch splitting is a standard requirement in industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and textiles, where lot traceability is mandatory and stock is rarely homogeneous. With this capability, SAP Logistics Management handles these scenarios natively, without workarounds or manual adjustments after the fact. It ensures accurate batch-level traceability all the way through the logistical process.
Putting It All Together
These three enhancements address batch management across the full warehouse process — from master data availability, to batch creation at goods receipt, to flexible fulfillment across multiple batches. Together, they represent a meaningful step forward in SAP Logistics Management's ability to support batch-intensive industries and operations.
