SAP’s August 2025 update to the ABAP Extensibility Guide aligned its technical recommendations with the clean core level model, adding guidance for ABAP Cloud development and governance for classic ABAP code. That guidance helps teams choose between building an extension on the S/4HANA stack and building it side by side on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). It also shapes how I plan SAP QA testing services, because each choice creates different test boundaries.
A classic Z-report and its BAdI live in one system, with one database and one transport path. A BTP app calls S/4HANA through APIs, publishes events, and ships through a pipeline. In this article, I follow one custom app through every test layer, compare it with its classic ABAP equivalent, and close with the six-step plan I recommend to teams starting this work.
